Tovstonogov, in directing Volodin’s play “Five Evenings,” personally taught me how to make out the stunningly beautiful soul hidden behind the boring, utilitarian words of a careworn woman. He exposed the characters of those on whom our lives depend, the soldier in the soul of the constant laborer… They don’t commit acts of bravery, but Tovstonogov always uncovered people’s readiness for valiant and heroic deeds.
