I have more than once spoken and written about the influence that critics like Vladimir Sappak had on us young directors, along with the whole slew of theatre writers gathered around him. Why around Sappak in particular?
He was a talented, good-hearted, attentive, and altogether exceptional person, with a kind personality. He was terribly sick and mostly stayed at home, but talking to him was always a pleasure. Everyone listened attentively to his brilliant and precise opinions about art. He was surrounded by a multitude of interesting critics that to this day still work in their field.
Those, and a few other people, defined a movement across all of art, in my opinion.
