Ranevskaya’s life is so inseparable from play, that without play it would be thoughtless and empty. Theatre was not generous to her: she didn’t play “her roles,” and didn’t get to play "to the end." That is to say: she didn’t live fully. So when sitting at home, she played something every minute – played on the phone, played for every guest, played by herself and with her favorite dog. Everything was an extended game – or, in other words, her craft. Ceaseless impersonation.
